Serving At: Seth Mokitimi Methodist Seminary

Hesed Soriano Lim, a missionary with the United Methodist General Board of Global Ministries, serves as an assistant in the Formation Department of Seth Mokitimi Methodist Seminary in Pietermaritzburg, Kwazulu/Natal, South Africa. She was commissioned in June 2019.

Seth Mokitimi trains students in theology and practical ministry. The training has two equally important programs, academic and formation. Formation focuses on six core values: dignity, unity, servant leadership, stewardship, integrity and intellect. Hesed has responsibilities in the areas of field education and the practice of ministry, including pastoral care.

Hesed is a social worker from the Philippines, where she grew up in a United Methodist parsonage. She is a member of the Cathedral United Methodist Church, Davao City, in the East Mindanao Philippines Annual Conference. She holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in social work and has worked in the government, at Kidapawan Doctors Hospital in North Cotabato and for nonprofit organizations. She worked in Manila in Kapatiran-Kaunlaran Foundation Inc., a social service institution and longtime Global Ministries’ partner, related to street children for girls.

Hesed is the daughter of the retired Bishop Leo A. Soriano and Dania A. Soriano, of The United Methodist Church. Her husband is the Rev. Rogelio Ypil Lim, and her brother is a missionary doctor and a pastor of The United Methodist Church. Both of her grandfathers were United Methodist church planters in rural areas of Mindanao, Philippines. She has been deeply involved in the church since childhood.

“I grew up surrounded by church workers,” Hesed says, “and I think this contributes to my desire to serve through mission. It runs in my blood: this eagerness to serve the people, not just in the church but also in the community.”

Hesed served as chairperson for her district’s Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Plan and as a member of the Davao Episcopal Area’s Health Program.

Hesed and Rogelio have a daughter, Kyria Soriano Lim.
