Serving At: Mission for Migrant Workers Limited

Home Country: Zimbabwe

Tariro Zvinaiye Mufute is a Global Mission Fellow with the United Methodist General Board of Global Ministries, engaged in a two-year term of service. She was commissioned on July 28, 2019.

The Global Mission Fellows program takes young adults ages 20-30 out of their home environments and places them in new contexts for mission experience and service. The program has a strong emphasis on faith and justice. Global Mission Fellows become active parts of their new local communities. They connect the church in mission across cultural and geographical boundaries. They grow in personal and social holiness and become strong young leaders working to build just communities in a peaceful world.

Based in Hong Kong PR, Tariro will serve at the Mission for Migrant Workers Limited. Since 1981, the ecumenical institution has assisted migrants as an outreach ministry of St. John’s Anglican Cathedral. The mission supports efforts to recognize and respect the rights and well-being of migrant workers.

Tariro was born in Mutare, Zimbabwe. She is a member of St. James Nyanga Central United Methodist Church in the East Zimbabwe Annual Conference. Her mother is the pastor. She holds a bachelor’s degree in social work, as well as an Executive Certificate in Monitoring and Evaluation from the University of Zimbabwe, Harare. She has worked as a volunteer and programs intern at Nyanga Community Development Trust and an intern for the Department of Child Welfare and Probation Services, Mutare, and currently serves as an economic empowerment consultant at Zimbabwe Christian Ministers Association, Harare.

Growing up in a Christian family, Tariro attended church but was not wholly committed to the faith. In 2010, she was invited to Girls Flight, a youth ministry related to the Walk to Emmaus program. She realized, “I needed to fully accept Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior. My Christian faith is now guided by my close relationship with God and letting myself be used by him as he is counting on me. I believe God has preserved my calling and purpose toward those who feel discouraged and unworthy. I spare my time in prison ministry, sharing testimonies of God’s love.” Tariro said her call to mission was also influenced by missionaries who served at the Old Mutare United Methodist Mission Center.
