Cody Grant Behr is a Global Mission Fellow with the United Methodist General Board of Global Ministries, engaged in a two-year term of service.  He is part of the 2021-2023 Global Mission Fellow cohort.

The Global Mission Fellows program takes young adults ages 20-30 out of their home environments and places them in new contexts for mission experience and service. The program has a strong emphasis on faith and justice. Global Mission Fellows become active parts of their new local communities. They connect the church in mission across cultural and geographical boundaries. They grow in personal and social holiness and become strong young leaders working to build just communities in a peaceful world.

Cody is a member of First United Methodist Church, Anchorage, Alaska Annual

Conference. He is a graduate of A.J. Diamond Memorial High School, Anchorage.

As a child in Anchorage, Alaska, Cody was an acolyte and a bell choir member and attended Sunday school regularly. Today, living more than 4,000 miles away from New York, he keeps up with his home congregation through virtual worship services.

“In each of our life stages,” Cody said, “I believe there is an ‘epiphany’ (not to be confused with our Christian season), where a person really begins to understand their mortality, and what gives them a sense of purpose. For me, it was the passing of a dear family member in 2016. It helped reignite my faith in God, and I am ashamed to admit my faith had waned after graduating high school. I reached out to a few counselors who were unable to help me on my healing/grieving journey.

“The one thing that healed me was private Bible study, and going back to First United Methodist Church in downtown Anchorage. Since then, I have steadily grown into my faith and church.”

Psalm 30:2 proved important to Cody: “O Lord, my God, I cried to you for help, and you have healed me,” it reads. “One could call this my first major step in my spiritual growth journey,” Cody said. “The other major step would be the inexplicable calling to serve as a missionary. It never occurred to me that The United Methodist Church has missionaries; I only found out when I did research on the internet.

“I feel called,” he continued, “as it is an important next step in my own growth, healing and learning. To teach is also to learn, and I believe if I am to serve, that learning will be inevitable, and humbling and enriching simultaneously.”
