Providing shelter and care for women, children, refugees and immigrants, using church partnerships

Annual Goal: $76,000.00

Year to Date Gifts: $28,539.43

Describe the need affecting community
There is a huge need for supplies for the refugees traveling to and through our borders. They travel long distances, sometimes days and weeks, to get to the border. We need supplies in the "Help Centers" which we encourage with the entire border area. Education along with the issues of refugees and immigrants is very important and lacking. Advocacy on behalf of our immigrant/refugee brothers and sisters is needed. A coordinated effort for communication and resources available is needed, as well. Humanitarian efforts with both sides of the border are needed to help this population.
How will this Advance project help to address the need?

The Methodist Border Mission Network (MBMN) is also formed of the Bishops along the Mexico-U.S. border. Bishop Carcano, of the California Pacific Conference of the UMC, is the chairperson of this group. She and others do much advocacy for Immigration Reform in the U.S. In Mexico, the Church of Mexico has appointed a National Immigration/Refugee Coordinator and the Conferences have their own Coordinators. The MBMN is also connected to the United Methodist Task Force on Immigration and the work is connected at our Conference levels. We work to help supply the Conference refugee/immigrant ministries with needed items and/or funds to purchase through the help of UMCOR and the Medicine Box. A new website needs to be developed to share the needs of all of our areas. This should be kept current and have links to ministries that areas that are working. We continue as we have done in the past with the "Focus Group of 10" and the direction it receives from the MBMN. (See above)

Describe the primary goal of the project

Goal: To manifest our Wesleyan heritage in cross-border ministries through mutually empowering collaboration between the Methodist Church of Mexico and the United Methodist Church.

Describe the change you would like to see in the community as a result of this Advance project.

The MBMN hopes to see leadership development in our churches through bilateral sharing of pastors and promoting ministry with immigrants and refugees. Hopefully, our congregations will develop new and re-newing ministries that welcome the immigrant and refugee to our midst. Developing, supporting and/or encouraging "help centers" or shelters for immigrants and refugees and the provision of other humanitarian needs. Assisting in repatriation if we are able. We also hope that we, as United Methodists and the Methodists in Mexico can help to supply health and spiritual needs to those immigrants and refugees coming to/through our areas.
